Ransom Wine Company
McMinnville, Oregon
Ransom Wine Company is an operation that produces 3 labels; Jigsaw, Ransom and Junehog. Jigsaw is exclusively Pinot Noir, and Ransom consists of Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, a Pinot Noir and grappa. Junehog is a white blend for the salmon. The Ransom label indicates a particular winemaking style was utilized. Juice extraction of all varietals utilizes the free run method for optimum flavor extraction. The Pinot Noir utilizes fruit sourced primarily from Temperance Hill Vineyard which is grown organically and the biodynamic Momtazi estate. Barrel time is extended to 14 months and held up in bottle for another 6 before release. The 2006 Ransom was aged in neutral barrels with no fining or filtering. A serious wine that can lay down for 5 to 10 years before opening or let it breathe 4 to 24 hours and it'll open up very nicely. 800 cases produced. Jigsaw is a Pinot Noir made from Willamette Valley fruit and aged for 10 months in 5% newoak. Fruit was sourced from 10 vineyards within a 30 mile radius of McMinville. Fruit was cold soaked for 5-7 days before fermentation with native and innoculated yeast. Some fining and filtering was done on this wine. 5000 cases produced. Junehog is an equal part blend of Pinot Gris, Muscat and Gewurztraminer that has a nice fruit body, low residual sugar (0.6), and an acid structure that delivers a bright and clean palate. Available only for a limited time once a year, Junehog is produced to increase awareness of northwest salmon issues. Proceeds from this wine are donated to restoration projects in the Columbia River basin where the Junehog used to reign as the world's largest salmon until the completion of the Grand Coulie dam in the early 1940's, which caused the extinction of this species.
